Studio Policy

Welcome to my Studio Policies page! I am excited to work with you and help you further your journey in piano and achieve your musical goals! Please take a moment to review the following policies and be sure to reach out if you have any questions!

Practice Expectations

Your focus in practice should be on quality and consistency. Daily practice is essential for growth.

Students are enrolled with the understanding that they will practice a minimum of five days each week. The minimum daily practice requirements are as follows:

For students younger than grade 2: 20-30 minutes a day

For students in grades 2-5:  30-45 minutes a day

For students in grades 6-8:  45-60 minutes a day

For Students in grades 9-12 60+ minutes a day

Students are expected to practice all the material assigned during their lesson, including all finger drills, scales, and repertoire.

Students are expected to keep a daily written Practice Record to be signed by the parent at the end of each week

If your student is unable to fill the specified practice requirements on a regular basis, it may be in the student’s best interest to discontinue lessons.

I expect the student to make sure they are at the right height and distance from the piano every time when they practice at home. (I will reach out to parents if accommodations for the student are needed)

Students are expected to practice good posture and technique during their at home practice; this means sitting up straight at the piano with feet solidly on the floor in front of them, as well as using good hand posture. Examples of poor posture to look out for include; collapsed (or flat) fingers, wrists below the keyboard, slouching at the bench, crossed legs or feet, or kneeling on the bench.

Parents should give lots of praise and positive feedback to their students for working hard to develop their skills and talents!

Recitals

Studio Etiquette

Students are required to come to lessons with their nails short and neatly trimmed, hats and hoodie hats taken off, and having brought all of their piano books and assigned materials.

Siblings not enrolled in piano lessons are welcome to sit in on a lesson provided they are quiet and do not interrupt the lesson-otherwise I may ask that they wait in the car or stay at home

Recitals

Parent Info

On the first lesson of the month, I ask parents to set aside 5 minutes before or after the lesson to talk about your students’ progress and any recommendations I have to help your student be the most successful in piano lessons.

Lessons are provided at the student’s agreed upon time and day each month.

Your scheduled lesson time and day can be changed with a request and at least 2 weeks notice to both teacher and student

Parents of children 10 or under are required to supervise their students' daily practice and sit in on their lesson each week. For young students, it is imperative that parents are involved in their student’s learning. Kids under the age of 10 do not possess adequate time management skills and cannot practice effectively by themselves. When parents are actively involved in home practice, students see much greater and faster progress and are much less likely to get bored with the piano because they are consistently making progress and learning new skills and repertoire. Young children love to make progress and feel accomplished.

Summer Lessons

The Summer lesson block is June 1st–August 31st

This year, summer lessons are optional but highly encouraged, as summer is the easiest time of the year to get into a good practice routine.

I see so many of my students flourish during the summer because they have more time to practice and more time at home than during the school year. I heartily encourage parents to use the summer to cement the habit of daily piano practice as much as possible in between travels.

I am offering weekly or bi-weekly morning lesson options during the summer to help accommodate travel plans

Please reach out with the day and time you would like to schedule your student’s summer lessons

Lesson Attendance and Missed Lessons

To see steady progress in piano it is essential that a student consistently attends all of their lessons, group classes, and performances. Regular attendance is essential for the well rounded pianist.

A late student will only receive the time left in their lesson.

A student who is early should enter the studio no more than three minutes before their scheduled lesson time.

By far, the students I see the most progress with are the ones where the parents are actively involved in their student's musical journey. As such, parents are encouraged to sit in on lessons so that they can be more knowledgeable in how they can support their child's practice at home.

For parents of new or young students under the age of 10, I require that the parents sit in on lessons to be able to help their student at home during their weekly practice.

Missed Lessons:

There are no refunds for missed lessons

In the case of a missed lesson due to a student illness-a makeup lesson will be offered, or the student can attend an extra group lesson.

If I have to miss a lesson, I will offer a makeup lesson at your convenience.

Lessons may not be made up for absences of more than 3 weeks

Recitals

Recitals and Holidays

Recitals are held four times a year

Two recitals will be held in a formal recital hall, the other two will be held in the teachers home or church building

The yearly Recital Fee ($25) per student is due October 1st of each year

Recital fees are used to cover the cost of the recital halls, awards and prizes, etc.

To participate in a recital students are required to 1. Have their chosen piece fully memorized, and 2. Play their memorized piece 10 times before the recital for different audiences. (a friend, neighbor, classmate, etc..) This helps the student get more comfortable with performing for new and different people.

Students who do not meet these requirements before the recital will be asked to sit out for that recital.

There will be no lessons the weeks of Christmas and new years

No lessons on Independence day, Labor Day, or thanksgiving day-there will be a special group lesson the Friday before these holidays for all students that need an alternate lesson during the holiday week.

Otherwise lessons continue as normal for students on all other days

There will be no lessons July 27th to August 10th
