Teaching Philosophy

My goal as a piano teacher is to teach students to play well and with confidence.
Piano is an amazing and fun instrument! I believe piano lessons should be exciting to my students. I strive to be patient, and always find a positive in every song. I always find something that I love and think that the student has shown improvement on that week. This helps to encourage my students as they accomplish greater and greater music skills. I like to take the time to connect with my students on a personal level. I strive to understand each student's unique personality and learning types. This helps to develop a good teacher/student relationship so my students feel comfortable with me. My students come to piano lessons excited to learn.

I believe in teaching at a student’s personal pace and tailoring lessons to fit each student’s understanding. It is very important to work through trouble areas with the student during the lesson. This helps to build confidence and they will practice their repertoire correctly throughout the week.
I believe in teaching core music skills that are important to acquire in order to be successful in learning the piano. I provide knowledgeable instruction through piano education curriculum, diagrams, focused practice, and theory games. I believe every student needs different strategies in order to learn effectively. While one game or diagram may help one student learn a concept, another student might need an entirely different approach to understand the same idea.
I believe in fostering a balanced knowledge of the piano through a wide variety of curriculum recommendations. I keep my students engaged in their weekly practice and learning by offering supplemental pieces in addition to using a method book series. I try to choose songs that the student will be excited to learn. I especially love helping the student find a song that they request and want to learn. I find a version that is on par with their individual level. This helps my students be excited about learning new repertoire.
